Serious training, without the pressure
By nine or ten, a kid who loves performing usually wants to get good at it. STARlights is built for that. Two hours a week gives us room to actually train rather than skim, and the material moves at a pace that respects how much these students can handle.
Over ten weeks, performers work on multi-part vocal harmony, choreography drawn from several dance styles, and scene work that asks them to make real choices about who a character is and what they want. They learn how to take a correction, how to hold a harmony line when the person next to them is singing something else, and how to keep performing when something goes sideways.
What they will not find is a ranking. SMASH is non-competitive by design, which for this age group matters more than it sounds. Nine to thirteen is exactly when kids start quietly deciding whether they are good enough to keep going. In this room, the answer is always yes, and the work is what changes.
